1. Statement of Commitment

HIVE Education Inc. ("HIVE") is committed to ensuring digital accessibility for people of all abilities, including students, educators, school administrators, and parents with disabilities.

We believe that every student deserves equal access to digital citizenship education, peer collaboration, and positive online social spaces. As a partner to public and private K-12 school districts, HIVE designs, develops, and maintains its web platform (app.hiveeducation.io), marketing portals (hiveeducation.io), administrative dashboards, and educational modules in strict accordance with the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) Guidance on Web Accessibility and the ADA, Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) (Public Entities/K-12 Schools), Title III of the ADA (Commercial Entities & Public Accommodations), and Sections 504 and 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.

2. Technical Accessibility Standards

To ensure equal access and non-discrimination, HIVE adopts the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA published by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) as our official technical benchmark.

Perceivable

Information and user interface components must be presentable to users in ways they can perceive (not invisible to their senses).

Operable

User interface components and navigation must be operable with a variety of assistive technologies (e.g., keyboard-only, screen reader, switch device).

Understandable

Information and the operation of the user interface must be understandable to all users.

Robust

Content must be robust enough to be reliably interpreted by a wide variety of user agents, including current and future assistive technologies.

3. Core Accessibility Provisions (DOJ ADA Web Guidance Alignment)

In direct alignment with the U.S. Department of Justice Web Guidance on common web accessibility barriers, HIVE guarantees the following technical controls across its platform:

3.1 Color Contrast & Visual Customization

  • High-Contrast Text Ratios: All body text meets or exceeds a contrast ratio of 4.5:1 against its background. Large text (18pt / 14pt bold) and active UI controls meet or exceed a 3:1 ratio.
  • Color-Independent Communication: Information, interactive states, warnings, and achievement badges are never conveyed through color alone. All status changes feature explicit text labels and visual icon indicators.
  • System Theme Integration: HIVE supports native dark/light modes and integrates seamlessly with OS-level high-contrast and reduced-motion user preferences.

3.2 Keyboard Navigation & Focus Control

  • 100% Keyboard Operability: Every interactive element—including navigation menus, post creation forms, interactive polls, Colony interest groups, and modal dialogs—is fully navigable using standard keyboard inputs (Tab, Shift+Tab, Enter, Space, Arrow Keys).
  • Visible Focus Indicators: Clear, high-contrast visual focus rings surround all active elements during keyboard navigation.
  • No Keyboard Traps: Keyboard focus moves logically through the DOM and is never trapped within modal overlays, popups, or custom widgets.

3.3 Screen Reader & Assistive Technology Compatibility

  • Semantic HTML Structure: Pages utilize proper HTML5 landmark elements (<header>, <nav>, <main>, <aside>, <footer>) and strict heading hierarchies (<h1> through <h6>).
  • ARIA 1.2 Implementation: Accessible Rich Internet Applications (ARIA) attributes are used to communicate dynamic UI states (e.g., aria-expanded, aria-selected, aria-live).
  • Real-Time AI Moderation Accessibility: Live announcements using aria-live="polite" ensure that screen reader users immediately receive real-time AI moderation feedback and restorative coaching prompts without interrupting screen reader flow.

3.4 Text Alternatives (Alt Text) & Media Accessibility

  • Alternative Text for Images: All non-text content—including UI icons, system graphics, achievement badges, and default avatars—includes descriptive alternative text (alt attribute or aria-label). Decorative elements are hidden from assistive tech using aria-hidden="true".
  • Video & Multimedia Accessibility: All instructional and restorative video modules provided within HIVE (including the Restorative Academy) include synchronized closed captions and accessible text transcripts.

3.5 Accessible Forms & Interactive Elements

  • Explicit Form Labels: All input fields, comment boxes, search bars, and dropdown menus are explicitly paired with visual <label> elements and programmatically linked for/id bindings.
  • Clear Error Identification: When form validation fails or an input error occurs, the item in error is identified in text, described to the user, and accompanied by actionable instructions for correction.

3.6 Flexible Layouts & Dynamic Zoom

  • Responsive Resizing: The platform supports page zooming up to 400% without loss of functionality, content clipping, or requiring horizontal scrolling (2D panning).

4. Shared Accessibility Responsibility Model

HIVE provides the infrastructure for safe school communication. To maintain end-to-end accessibility:

HIVE guarantees that all system software, navigation, core features, AI prompts, and built-in interfaces strictly adhere to WCAG 2.1 AA and ADA requirements.

User-Generated Content (District/School)

HIVE provides automated prompt reminders and UI tools that encourage students and staff to add descriptive alt text when uploading custom images or attachments to school Colonies.

5. Ongoing Testing, Audit & Verification Protocol

To ensure continuous compliance across software updates:

  1. Automated Auditing: Automated accessibility tests (leveraging axe-core and CI/CD linting rules) run on every code build to prevent accessibility regressions.
  2. Manual & Assistive Tech Testing: Regular manual audits are performed using keyboard-only navigation and popular screen readers across devices (NVDA/JAWS on Windows, VoiceOver on macOS/iOS, TalkBack on Android).
  3. Third-Party ACR / VPAT: HIVE provides an updated Accessibility Conformance Report (ACR) based on the VPAT 2.4 (Voluntary Product Accessibility Template) to participating school districts upon request.
